GOOD SYMPTOM
2023-20243RD THING PRESSCO-CURATOR
WRITER
The incapacity to name is a good symptom of disturbance.&#38;nbsp; – Roland Barthes

Good Symptom is curated by M Freeman, Rana San, and myself. Released in 12 monthly installments (September 2023-August 2024), this suite of short films troubles the boundaries between&#38;nbsp; literature and cinema. We reviewed more than 700 submissions from around the world and solicited work from renowned artists to craft showcases of literary media arts experiments that push the language of poetry, essay, correspondence, autobiography, manifestos, thought pieces, and hybrid literary works off the page and onto the screen.

Good Symptom coalesces work that disrupts traditional film and literary genres, that transgresses the borders between these forms in idiosyncratic ways. Work that fissures the creative firmament by messing unexpectedly withimage, sound and text. Work that stirs up a certain cognitive dissonance. That opens gaps in the imagination and in between things—illuminated spaces of uncertainty, reckoning, wonder. This work savors the nature of time, of writing, of being and belonging. It offers a way out of imposed reality and fucked up thinking. – Episode 1 collaborative curatorial essay

Verse meets visuals in motion
Cadence approaches video poetry as a literary genre presented as visual media that makes new meaning from the combination of text and moving image.&#38;nbsp;

Read an interview on the beginnings of Cadence.

The festival is a series of screenings, workshops, and discussions on the genre of video poetry, taking place during National Poetry Month. Cadence is currently the only video poetry festival in the Pacific Northwest, fostering critical and creative growth around the genre of video poetry.Cadence creates opportunities to find community through screening events, artist-led workshops, in-person and online artist happy hours, jury and screening teams, and communication with up to 80 artists during a single festival.
Cadence created the pilot program for the Northwest Film Forum's only Artist-in-Residence program, supporting the generation of new video poetry work by local experimental, interdisciplinary artists.
We regularly commission artists to create new artwork, produce merchandise, and program-specific digital art. We work with cultural organizations across the state to collaborate on film screenings of Cadence artists.&#38;nbsp;

DIRECTOR
A confluence of writers at Smoke Farm in Arlington, WA.
Till was a writers’ residency and writing event series that produced an annual chapbook. Founded in 2013 through a collaboration between Arne Pihl and Chelsea Werner-Jatzke, Till offered scalable and affordable programs to writers of all genres at all stages of their career.

Till was created to increase access to the literary world through writing practices, feedback forums, workspaces, literary readings, and publication opportunities. Over six years, we&#38;nbsp;supported hundreds of underserved literary artists.
Organized around an annual alternative writing residency at Smoke Farm in Arlington, WA,&#38;nbsp;Till cultivated a space for diverse voices and an opening where writers could create, inspire, and grow their craft.
Residencies included writing workshops and produced the publication of a hand-bound chapbook. Covers were letterpress printed as part of a hands-on workshop and chapbooks were released in Seattle in the fall with free public readings.Till Tonight, a monthly writing event, took place in Seattle as a generative space for all writers. Till Tonight was hosted in partnership with cultural organizations around Seattle including Common Area Maintenance, Canoe Social Club, Mount Analogue, and King Street Station.

FORWARD2017-2020
SHAUN KARDINAL

Part 1: Origin Stories
Forward is an exhibition series where artists transform works they've received from others, exhibit the work briefly, then hand it off to someone new.
To start this iterative art exhibition, I was one of twelve writers invited by project director Shaun Kardinal to contribute to a physical transformation of words, where geometric forms reshaped vibrant landscape postcards, each containing letters, hand-written with intention.
The text I wrote on the back of the postcards provided to me were cut up and collaged into sculptures by Shaun Kardinal before being handed off to artist Kat Larson to reimagine for the 2018 exhibition, and to artist Laura Sullivan Cassidy to transform into a new work from the material for the 2019 exhibition. Unfortunately, the final iteration of the exhibition was permanently delayed due to Covid.</description>

Exquisite Cadence
Working with a poem by Seattle’s Civic Poet, Jourdan Imani Keith, I developed and led a workshop with collaborator Rana San, that unpacked how poetry can exist as visual media and provided basic film instruction. The result was edited into a final collaborative video poem by digital artist Rachael Lang, and screened as part of the 2020 Cadence Video Poetry Festival.

Additionally, I curated a showcase of video poetry to be screened as part of a panel I presented at Pacific Northwest College of the Arts.

Winter Poetry Festival was two days that centered poetry across forms and mediums in a free festival of performances, interactive stations, screenings, poets’ market, workshops, and the opportunity to support some vibrant, up-and-coming voices in the region.
